ANTAQ study shows increase in inland and coastal shipping

An in-depth study released on May 26 by ANTAQ (the national waterway transportation agency) titled “X-Ray of Cargo Transport via Cabotage and Inland Navigation in Brazil through Simplified Studies” pointed out that there was a 20.7% increase in the TKU indicator for transportation via inland navigation and a 6% increase in cabotage in 2019 compared to 2018.
The survey presented the latest estimate of the demand for waterway cargo transportation, expressed by the useful ton (T) and ton-kilometer (TKU) indicators. The study was performed in 2019 in the Brazilian waterway corridors of the Solimões-Amazonas, Madeira, Tocantins-Araguaia, Paraguay, and Paraná-Tietê Rivers and Hidrovia do Sul, and on the main routes along the coast. The study used the main pairs of origin/destination of inland navigation with longitudinal and coastal routes.
The useful ton kilometer (TKU) indicator is used in the quantitative representation of the performance of the modes of transport applicable to the planning, monitoring, and inspection of economic activity, as well as activities of public and private interest. The useful ton (T) is, by definition, the total payload carried on the track, that is, only the weight of the load, without considering the tare weight of the equipment used. TKU, on the other hand, is determined by multiplying the useful ton transported by the distance traveled.
In cabotage, in 2019, the TKU indicator was 223.370 billion ton-kilometers, 6.03% higher than in 2018 (210.660 billion ton-kilometers), resuming the persistent growth trend.
