The TEGRAM-Itaqui Consortium announced the handling of 13.5 million tonnes of grains through the Maranhão Grain Terminal (TEGRAM) in 2025, shipped aboard 202 vessels that departed from the Port of Itaqui (São Luís, Maranhão) to the main global markets for Brazilian agribusiness, especially Asia and Europe. During the year, 11.7 million tonnes of soybeans and 1.8 million tonnes of corn were exported through a robust infrastructure that positions the terminal as the main logistics hub for agribusiness in the Arco Norte region, serving in particular the states of MAPITO (Maranhão, Piauí and Tocantins) as well as areas of northeastern Mato Grosso and Bahia.

With the volume handled this year, TEGRAM is strategically positioned to serve the record grain harvest expected for the 2025/26 season, which is projected to reach 354.8 million tonnes. This estimate was released in November by Brazil’s National Supply Company (Conab), linked to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming (MDA). To sustain its growth trajectory, TEGRAM has a third-phase expansion project, which includes the operation of a third berth and the addition of 8.5 million tonnes to its annual capacity, currently estimated at around 15 million tonnes.

“The large volume exported this year shows that we hold a relevant position within the Brazilian agribusiness value chain as we consolidate ourselves as a strategic logistics corridor, especially within our area of influence, which includes the Arco Norte,” said Marcos Pepe Bertoni, president of the TEGRAM-Itaqui Consortium. “Our robust infrastructure, team, and processes were designed to support this demand and ensure shipments at the pace required by agribusiness.”

Continuous investments to improve logistics infrastructure

TEGRAM’s performance reflects its operational efficiency and the investments made in its operations, generating positive spillover effects by stimulating agricultural production in the region. Operating for 10 years, the terminal has helped reduce logistics costs and expand access to international markets.

TEGRAM operates four warehouses with a static storage capacity of 500,000 tonnes of grains. It has road receiving pits capable of handling more than 900 trucks per day combined, and two rail receiving pits capable of unloading four railcars simultaneously each (a total of eight railcars at the same time). This structure was developed through two expansion phases since operations began. In the first phase, in 2015, the terminal started operations with infrastructure suited to operate one berth. In 2020, the second phase was completed, increasing operational capacity with the addition of a second berth, consolidating the terminal as a logistics hub for agribusiness in the region.

TEGRAM is now preparing for its third expansion phase, with a planned investment of R$ 1.161 billion for the construction of a third berth, which will allow the addition of 8.5 million tonnes of annual operational capacity. The expansion aims to meet the growing demand of Brazilian agribusiness and further consolidate the Port of Itaqui as one of the largest grain export complexes in Brazil’s Arco Norte.
