Argentina: Paraná River Drought Boosts Terminals South of Buenos Aires

The ongoing drought along the Paraná River has unexpectedly boosted production and terminals located south of the Buenos Aires region.
According to Argenports, prices surged nearly 4.5% during the week of September 23, marking the highest figure of the month.
Specifically, corn sales for delivery to terminals at the northern Rosario port reached 9,750 tonnes. However, sales for delivery to terminals at Bahía Blanca, further south, exceeded 25,000 tonnes.
Moreover, exporters at Bahía Blanca terminals had to offer premiums to complete shipments of corn originating from the Paraná River.
Due to the low water levels of the Paraná River, vessels are loading smaller volumes on the waterway and need to top off their holds at terminals south of Buenos Aires.
According to Argenports data, Argentina’s corn exports have reached 3.38 million tonnes, with 1.50 million and 1.56 million tonnes already booked for October and November, respectively.
