Argentina pork exports rose sharply in the first five months of the year, with shipments of pork and byproducts totaling 7,645 tonnes between January and May, according to the Secretariat of Agriculture under the Ministry of Economy.

Export revenue reached $10.04 million over the period, up 156.8% from the same months a year earlier. In volume terms, Argentina pork exports increased 91.2% year over year.

According to data compiled by Datamar, shipments to China rose 24%, while Argentina also exported to new destinations such as the Philippines. The chart below shows the market share of Argentina’s main trading partners in the pork trade:

The figures point to stronger international demand for Argentina’s pork sector, while domestic production also continued to expand. Pork output reached 354,588 tonnes between January and May, up 11.8% from the same period of the previous year.

The increase in production was supported by higher slaughter levels, which rose 9.7% to 3.72 million head during the five-month period.

Domestic consumption also gained ground. In May, per capita pork consumption reached 19.59 kilograms per inhabitant per year, an 8.4% increase compared with the same month last year.

The growth in Argentina pork exports comes as the sector seeks to expand its presence in foreign markets while maintaining a larger production base at home.
