Puerto Rosales exported 3,639,252 tonnes of crude oil in 2024, marking a 3.31% increase from the 3,522,682 tonnes shipped in 2023. Additionally, the Argentine port handled a total of 75 vessels last year.
According to data obtained by ArgenPorts, 1,813,513 tonnes were shipped to the United States, 1,000,082 tonnes to Brazil, 287,347 tonnes to Peru, and 224,779 tonnes to Uruguay.
The volume handled in 2024 also surpassed the figures recorded in 2022 (3,405,000 tonnes) and significantly exceeded those in 2021 (1,331,398 tonnes) and 2020 (1,130,018 tonnes).
Of the two single-point moorings (SPMs) operating at the oil terminal in southern Buenos Aires Province, within the Bahía Blanca bay, nearly all crude oil exports were shipped through Punta Cigüeña.
From that facility, 3,035,466 tonnes were exported on 59 vessels, while another 487,216 tonnes were shipped via the Punta Ancla SPM on 21 tankers.
This solidifies Puerto Rosales as the main maritime export hub for shale oil produced in Vaca Muerta, a role set to expand further with the extension of Oldelval’s pipeline network, which will increase crude oil availability in southern Buenos Aires.
Despite rising exports, domestic crude oil throughput at Puerto Rosales declined by 7.6% in 2024, dropping from the record 12,938,300 tonnes handled in 2023 to 11,959,789 tonnes last year. The number of vessels used also fell by 7%, from 230 in 2023 to 213 in 2024.
