The Association of Private Port Terminals (ATP), which brings together large companies and represents 70 private ports across Brazil, announced on Thursday (Aug. 7) the creation of its Innovation Committee. The launch took place during the entity’s 1st Committee Meeting (Sustainability, Legal, Infrastructure, Communication, and Security), held in Brasília with the participation of member company representatives and authorities, who highlighted innovation as a driver of port development and as essential for the efficiency and competitiveness of Brazilian ports and the country’s exports in the global market.
Opening the meeting were ATP president Murillo Barbosa; executive director Gabriela Costa; Valter Souza, director of Institutional Relations at the National Transport Confederation (CNT); Bruno Orlandi, secretary of the Port of Santos; Flávia Takafashi, director at the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq); and Mariana Pescatori, executive secretary at the Ministry of Ports and Airports.
“This was an event that is here to stay in the coming years. It was extremely positive to engage all participants from all six ATP committees in support of our association and the sustainable development of private ports, which are essential to the Brazilian economy,” said ATP’s president. Member companies handle 60% of the country’s port cargo, operating in various sectors, including mining, steelmaking, oil and gas, agribusiness, containers, and logistics complexes, all of which are crucial for Brazil’s foreign trade.
Following the opening session, the coordinators of the six ATP committees provided updates on their primary ongoing agendas. In the afternoon, the event hosted an integrated discussion on “Dredging, licensing, and public safety in navigation,” addressing regulatory, operational, and institutional bottlenecks affecting port terminals. Panelists included Letícia Nascimento Vimeney (Comar/Ibama); Edme Tavares, director of Waterway Infrastructure at DNIT; and Dino Antunes, national secretary for Waterways and Navigation.
The final session of the event saw the official launch of the ATP Innovation Committee. Tetsu Koike, Director of Sectoral Policy, Planning, and Innovation Programs at the Ministry of Ports and Airports, underscored the role of innovation as a catalyst for port development.
“ATP made the right move by creating its new Innovation Committee. It is essential to have a technical discussion on issues of collective interest to generate solution proposals that can be forwarded to the relevant authorities,” Koike said.
