Avian Flu: Mexico Limits Restrictions on Brazilian Chicken to Rio Grande do Sul

On Tuesday (June 10), Mexico reduced the restrictions previously imposed on Brazilian chicken meat following the detection of a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak in the municipality of Montenegro, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The Mexican ban now applies only to poultry products from Rio Grande do Sul.
In contrast, Mauritania announced a complete suspension of chicken imports from all of Brazil, while Oman has limited its suspension to products originating from Rio Grande do Sul.
Current Export Status:
- Total suspension of poultry exports from all of Brazil:
- China, European Union, Iraq, South Korea, Chile, Philippines, South Africa, Peru, Albania, Canada, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Malaysia, Mauritania, Argentina, Timor-Leste, Morocco, India, Sri Lanka, North Macedonia, and Pakistan.
- Suspension restricted to the state of Rio Grande do Sul:
- Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Kuwait, United Kingdom, Oman, Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Angola, Turkey, Bahrain, Cuba, Montenegro, Namibia, Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.
- Suspension limited to the municipality of Montenegro (RS):
- United Arab Emirates, Japan, Qatar, and Jordan.
Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) continues to coordinate closely with the sanitary authorities of importing countries, providing all technical information transparently and swiftly. The measures aim to ensure sanitary safety and a prompt, secure resumption of exports.
To consumers, the Ministry reiterates that the consumption of poultry meat and eggs poses no risk to human health.
