Week 202522

With mango exports to the United States scheduled to begin on July 1, Bahia’s Agricultural Defense Agency (Adab) is calling on the production and commercial sectors to intensify monitoring and control of fruit fly infestations in orchards. To align procedures and provide updates, the agency will hold a series of technical meetings this Friday (May 29) at the auditorium of its partner organization, Valexport, in Petrolina.

“The goal is to guide producers, exporters, and Technical Managers (RTs) of treatment facilities and production units to improve control measures and reduce the population of fruit flies – a quarantine pest – in mango orchards registered for exports to the U.S., our main buyer,” emphasized Weber Aguiar, coordinator of Adab’s Phytosanitary Project for Fruit Fly Control. Organizers expect around 60 participants at the event.

The program will include updates on federal and state regulations for mandatory monitoring and pest control, along with all the tools available to combat fruit flies in registered orchards exporting to the U.S. Critical issues and risks identified by APHIS will also be shared, as well as the appropriate control practices required of participants in the export program.

During the event, Adab will launch a new communication channel for the production sector and general public to file reports and ask questions about the pest: MoscaZap – (71) 99945-8008.

International Market

Mango exports from Bahia typically begin during the so-called “export window,” which coincides with the fruit’s harvest season in Brazil’s Northeast, especially in states like Bahia, Pernambuco, and Rio Grande do Norte. This window allows Bahia to benefit from reduced international supply, especially from countries like Ecuador, boosting demand for Brazilian mangoes.

Significance

In 2024, the São Francisco Valley region, which includes Petrolina (PE) and Juazeiro (BA), further established itself as one of Brazil’s leading fruit export hubs. The region’s irrigated fruit farming, supported by a favorable climate and solid infrastructure, has enabled large-scale cultivation and export of tropical fruits. Mango remains the region’s top exported fruit, with the São Francisco Valley accounting for approximately 95% of all Brazilian mango exports.
