Banana: Exports End 2024 in Decline
Jan, 28, 2025 Posted by Sylvia SchandertWeek 202505
Brazilian banana exports decreased in 2024. According to Comex Stat, the exported volume was 49 thousand tons, a 13% drop compared to the previous year. According to contributors from Hortifrúti/Cepea, this decline is attributed to the controlled supply of dwarf bananas nationally and competition from countries like Bolivia and Paraguay, which compete for the Mercosur market during certain periods.
The main destinations for 2024 were Uruguay, responsible for 50% of the total volume exported by Brazil; Argentina, with 40%; and the Netherlands, with 5%. In December 2024, the export volume fell by about 53% compared to November 2024, with 2.95 thousand tons being shipped – a typical drop due to reduced national supply. However, the December 2024 figure was 79% higher than in December 2023 due to a temporary increase in supply during certain weeks driven by the warm weather.
