Bioenergy Surpasses Meat and Juice in São Paulo Agribusiness Export Rankings

In the first four months of the year, the bioenergy sector-led agribusiness exports from the state of São Paulo totaled US$2.126 billion, accounting for 24.6% of the state’s total agro exports during the period.

Meanwhile, the meat sector recorded US$ 1.213 billion in foreign sales in the first quarter, representing 14% of São Paulo’s agribusiness exports.

The juice category followed, reaching US$ 1.054 billion, with a 12.1% share of agro exports between January and April.

These highlights come from an analysis led by Carlos Nabil Ghobril, coordinator of the São Paulo Agency for Agribusiness Technology (APTA), alongside researcher José Alberto Ângelo and guest researcher Marli Dias Mascarenhas Oliveira, both from the Agricultural Economics Institute (IEA-APTA), part of the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Supply.

Performance of the Main Agribusiness Export Categories in São Paulo

The top five agribusiness export product groups were:

Bioenergy complex (sugar-ethanol): Accounted for 24.6% of total agro exports from São Paulo, totaling US$ 2.136 billion, of which sugar represented 88.7% and ethanol 11.3%.

Meat sector: Represented 14% of agribusiness exports, totaling US$ 1.213 billion, with beef accounting for 82.5%.

Juice group: Held a 12.1% share, totaling US$ 1.054 billion—98.2% of which was orange juice.

Forestry products: Made up 11.1% of exported volume, with US$ 962.48 million. Pulp accounted for 52.3% and paper 37.9%.

Soy complex: Represented 10.9% of total agro exports, amounting to US$ 947.36 million, with 83.7% being soybeans.

These five product groups represented 72.7% of São Paulo’s agribusiness exports.

Coffee ranked sixth, with a 7.5% share of the export portfolio, reaching US$ 653.58 million—73.8% from green coffee and 22.9% from soluble coffee.

Agribusiness Faces Export Decline

According to the report, from January to April 2025, São Paulo’s agribusiness sector experienced a decline in exports and a rise in imports compared to the same period in 2024.

Total exports reached US$8.70 billion, a drop of 11.6%, while imports grew 6.5% to US$1.98 billion.

As a result, the sector’s trade surplus stood at US$6.72 billion, 15.3% lower than the amount recorded in the first four months of the previous year.

Agribusiness exports accounted for 40.7% of all exports from the State of São Paulo during the period, while imports represented 6.9% of the state’s total.

Compared to the same period in 2024, the sector’s share of total exports decreased by 3.4 percentage points, and its share of imports declined by 0.9 percentage points.
