Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD is becoming increasingly visible on the streets of Brazil, especially in São Paulo, where vehicle leasing programs drive part of the expansion—many tailored for app-based drivers. However, beyond their growing traffic presence, Brazilian consumers play a major role in BYD’s global strategy.

Throughout 2024, BYD exported 417,000 vehicles worldwide, including both electric and hybrid models. Of that total, nearly 77,000 units were shipped to Brazil. This means Brazilian drivers were responsible for approximately 20% of BYD’s total exports, making Brazil the company’s most significant international market outside China.

The brand leads the electric vehicle market globally and within Brazil. Among its most popular models on Brazilian roads is the Song, available locally in two versions: fully electric and hybrid. Over the course of 2024, 26,000 units of the Song were registered in Brazil. Completing the brand’s top three bestsellers in the country are the Dolphin Mini, with 21,000 units, and the Dolphin, with 14,000—both fully electric models.

BYD began operating in Brazil in 2013, initially focusing on electrifying bus fleets. Two years later, it opened its first manufacturing plant in Campinas, São Paulo state, to produce electric bus chassis and assemble batteries. The company officially entered Brazil’s passenger car market in 2022.

In terms of pricing, the brand’s most affordable model in Brazil is the Dolphin Mini. It starts at R$99,000 for buyers eligible for tax incentives granted to people with disabilities. Without the incentive, the price increases to R$118,000. BYD’s lineup in the country currently includes 12 other models, with the most expensive being the Han sedan, which sells for R$560,000.
