Brazil Achieves Record Share in Global Cotton Shipments

Brazilian cotton lint exports are booming, accounting for 30.5% of global shipments, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) analyzed by the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea).

Cepea highlights Brazil’s highest share in history, surpassing the United States, which held 25.8% of global exports in mid-2024. The U.S. had consistently ranked first until this shift.

Researchers at Cepea attribute Brazil’s leading position to its record domestic cotton production, which, according to the latest USDA figures, now represents 14% of global output for the 2024/25 season.

In just the first nine months of the 2024/25 marketing year (August 2024 to April 2025), Brazil exported 2.35 million tons of cotton lint — only 12% less than the total exported during the previous season.
