Brazil and China Sign Agreement to Expand Ethanol Exports

This measure, aimed at strengthening biofuel trade between the two countries, comes at a time of energy transition, with China seeking alternatives to fossil fuels. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who will arrive in China after visiting Russia to formalize the agreement, aims further to deepen the commercial ties between the two nations.
Expansion of Ethanol Exports
With its strong ethanol production, Brazil sees China as a strategic opportunity to expand its exports. Currently, the Asian country imports Brazilian ethanol to blend with gasoline, which aligns with its energy transition policy, which seeks to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Growth in Exports and Future Perspectives
In the first half of last year, ethanol exports to China totaled USD 27 million. Although China is a producer of biofuels, its growing emphasis on developing electric energy creates a considerable opening for the importation of ethanol, especially from Brazil, one of the world’s largest commodity producers.
Relations with the United States and the Tariff Challenge
Brazilian ethanol also plays a central role in trade negotiations between Brazil and the United States. The Trump administration indicated the possibility of setting commercial quotas for aluminum and steel, provided that Brazil reduces the import tax on ethanol. However, this issue has met resistance within the Brazilian market, which faces challenges adapting to the proposed changes.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding with China reflects the increasing importance of Brazilian ethanol in the global market. Through this action, the Brazilian government seeks to boost its exports and consolidate a strategic position in the biofuel trade amid new global energy demands.
