Brazil and Sweden Sign Protocol to Regulate Defense Product Exports

The Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee (CRE) approved on Thursday (May 22) the Protocol on the Export Control of Defense Products between Brazil and Sweden, originally signed in Brasília in November 2022.

The legislative decree concerning the protocol, PDL 226/2024, received a favorable opinion from Senator Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS) and will now proceed to the Senate Plenary for further consideration.

The protocol establishes a legal framework for the transfer of defense products between the two countries and to third parties. According to the agreement, any sale to third countries requires prior written consent from the other party, and the protocol also lays out guidelines for protecting classified information.

“The adoption of a protocol for the control of defense product exports is essential to regulate the international trade of weapons and sensitive technologies. In a global scenario marked by recurring conflicts and geopolitical instability, such control is crucial to prevent the indiscriminate proliferation of arms,” said Senator Mourão.
