Brazil and Uruguay will hold a technical exchange for semiannual monitoring of sanitary and phytosanitary regulations in the two countries. The agreement was signed on September 10 in Porto Alegre by the Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, and the Uruguayan Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos.
The intention is to strengthen actions in the area of defense and border surveillance. “It is a joint effort that already exists, but it will be intensified,” stated the Brazilian minister. “We want to discuss standards and new application methodologies and strengthen all production and health surveillance systems at the borders to prevent the introduction of diseases in this region, such as African swine fever,” said Mattos.
Uruguay asked for Brazil’s support to eradicate the parasitic disease caused by the screw-worm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Uruguayan territory. The ministers also discussed trade in agricultural products between the two countries, such as Yerba mate, sugar, and milk.
