Brazil awaits resumption of chicken exports to China

China has not yet resumed purchases of Brazilian chicken meat — imports have been suspended since mid-May, when an avian flu case was detected at a commercial farm in Rio Grande do Sul — but Brazil’s poultry sector remains optimistic and expects good news in the coming weeks, according to Cepea researchers. Chinese representatives visited Brazil in the second half of September to assess the country’s management of the outbreak.

Secex data show that from January to May, Brazil exported an average of 45,650 tonnes of chicken meat per month to China, representing around 10% of total shipments. In June, July, and August, however, the monthly average fell to just 191 tonnes, or 0.05% of Brazil’s exports in that period.

Cepea researchers note that if China — currently the only country maintaining an embargo on Brazilian poultry — resumes imports, Brazil is ready to supply sufficient chicken meat to meet Chinese demand without affecting domestic availability or driving up local prices.
