Week 202236

Brazilian exports of beef (in natura and processed) totaled 230,200 tonnes in August and generated USD 1.36 billion, informed the Brazilian Meatpacking Association (Abrafrigo) based on data from the country’s Department of Foreign Trade (Secex). Compared to the same month in 2021, the exported volume grew 8.6% and revenue increased by 15.8%. Both results represent new monthly records.

According to Abrafrigo, the increase in purchases by China explains the sector’s performance last month. The Asian country has started to stock up on protein for the upcoming Lunar New Year celebration on January 2022, when demand is usually high. As a result, the Chinese imported 131,900 tonnes from Brazil in August.

From January to August, the South American country shipped 1.52 million tonnes, and revenue reached USD 8.825 billion, up 18.4% and 40.7%, respectively.

China remains the foremost destination for shipments and absorbed 51.8% of the total volume sent abroad in the first eight months of the year, meaning 786.9 thousand tonnes (+31%). Sales to the Chinese were 69.7% higher in terms of profitability (US$ 5.32 billion) than in the same period of 2021.

The American market is Brazil’s second-largest customer this year. The US imported 123,100 tonnes through August, up 85.2% year-on-year. Egypt appears in third, with purchases of 81,300 tonnes, almost two times the total for the same period last year.
