Brazil is expected to maintain its global leadership in tobacco exports for the 32nd consecutive year. From January to June 2025, the country shipped 206,518 tonnes of the product. The volume generated US$ 1.36 billion in revenue. The data comes from the Ministry of Development (MDIC/ComexStat).
This performance represents a 5.77% increase in export volume compared to the first half of 2024. In terms of revenue, the increase was 9.5% over the same period last year (when the sector reached US$ 1.24 billion).
The main buyers of Brazilian tobacco were China, Belgium, the United States, Indonesia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. The sector expects to close the year with exports exceeding US$ 3 billion. The projection takes into account estimates by consultancy firm Deloitte, which forecasts growth between 10.1% and 15% in foreign sales in 2025.
According to Valmor Thesing, president of the Interstate Tobacco Industry Union (SindiTabaco), the sector maintains an average of more than 500,000 tonnes exported per year.
“Our production is sold to more than 100 countries,” he states. He highlights international preference for the Brazilian product and relies on the Integrated Tobacco Production System to ensure supply.
Rio Grande do Sul accounts for most of Brazil’s tobacco exports. In the first half of 2025, the state shipped 188.3 thousand tonnes. The total value reached US$ 1.2 billion. The crop represented 12.55% of the state’s total exports in 2024. This year, it leads the ranking of Rio Grande do Sul’s foreign sales.
