Brazil eyes opportunity expand crude oil sales to China

The Brazilian government has begun to assess, behind the scenes, the possibility of expanding crude oil exports to China amid changes in the geopolitical landscape involving Venezuela and the United States. The assessment comes as shifts in global oil trade flows could open space for new suppliers in the Asian market. The information was reported by CNN Brasil.
With the prospect of the United States taking over part of Venezuela’s trade flows, officials at Brazil’s foreign ministry, Itamaraty, believe Brazil could offset a potential decline in Venezuelan sales to the Asian powerhouse.
China already holds a central position in Brazil’s crude oil exports and is currently the largest buyer of this product from the country. It is the same energy segment that China imports from Venezuela, reinforcing the view that there is room for Brazil to expand its share of that market.
The United States, in turn, ranks as the second-largest buyer of Brazilian refined oil products, such as diesel and jet fuel, trailing only Singapore. However, U.S. participation has shown a downward trend in recent quarters, a movement that could intensify if energy trade between Washington and Caracas increases.
Against this backdrop, government advisers see the current international realignment as a strategic opportunity for Brazil to diversify markets and expand exports. The assessment echoes the approach taken during the period of so-called “tariff hikes” imposed by Donald Trump, the current U.S. president, when Brazil sought alternative trade routes to mitigate external impacts.
Aides to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also point to the potential of oil from the Equatorial Margin region. While there is still no set timeline for the start of production, expectations are that future output could further strengthen Brazil’s position in the Chinese market, increasing the country’s relevance as a strategic energy supplier.
