The Brazilian Fruit Exporters Association (Abrafrutas) has secured a major breakthrough: fresh Brazilian grapes are now cleared for export to China. This strategic milestone for the national fruit industry crowns years of negotiations and coincides with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Brazil.
China, with over 1.4 billion inhabitants and a high demand for premium food products, represents a key market for Brazilian exports. This opportunity will allow Brazil, one of the world’s largest fruit producers, to offer grapes renowned for their quality and distinctive flavor, Fructidor informs.
In early 2024, Chinese inspectors visited Brazilian production fields to evaluate sustainable practices and phytosanitary controls, which were decisive steps in approving the export protocol.
During the June Chinese-Brazilian Commission of High Level of Concertation and Cooperation (COSBAN) meeting, phytosanitary negotiations were concluded, leaving only the official announcement pending. This opens new perspectives for Brazilian exporters.
In 2023, Brazil produced 1.7 million tonnes of grapes and exported 73,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, China imported grapes valued at $600 million, highlighting the market’s potential. Guilherme Coelho, president of Abrafrutas, emphasized that this achievement not only promises profitability but also reinforces Brazil’s position as a global leader in high-quality fruits.
