Brazil initiates investigation on exports of pre-painted steel from China

The Brazilian federal government has launched an investigation on Friday (08) to “probe the existence of dumping in China’s exports to Brazil of pre-painted steel.” The decision was announced by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC) in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU).

In the Common Mercosur Nomenclature (NCM), the products correspond to numbers 77210.70.10, 7210.70.20, 7212.40.10, 7212.40.21, and 7212.40.29.

The request for investigation was made on October 31 last year by Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) – the national steelmaking company.

At the moment, there are approximately 60 other probing requests under review regarding Chinese steel exports to Brazil, according to MDIC.

Dumping occurs when a company exports a product at a lower price than it sells in the domestic market. Depending on the effects this practice has on the industry of the importing country, the World Trade Organization (WTO) authorizes measures such as taxing imports.
