Committed to boosting multimodality and further integrating Brazil by rail, the Federal Government launched a new tender on Thursday (4) for the expansion of the West-East Integration Railway (Fiol 2). The works will cover the stretch between the municipalities of Guanambi and Caetité, in Bahia, with an estimated investment of R$507.1 million over 35.75 kilometers.

“This government contribution will support the railway auction scheduled for next year, which will connect Lucas do Rio Verde, in Mato Grosso, to the Port of Ilhéus, in Bahia. This will enable a link toward Chancay, in Peru, forming a bioceanic corridor in the country,” said Leonardo Ribeiro, Brazil’s National Secretary of Railway Transport. “This is a historic solution, as the government has been trying to make this section viable for 15 years,” he added.

The tender is the result of technical work by Infra S.A., which revised the railway’s original route. The previous alignment ran along the dam of a reservoir responsible for supplying several municipalities in the region. In addition to building the section known as Lot 05FC, the project also includes the preparation of engineering studies necessary for its implementation.

“The Infra S.A. teams worked to adjust the alignment, especially near the Ceraíma Dam. The new route ensures environmental balance and a more sustainable railway. This mitigates risks for the local population,” said Infra S.A. CEO Jorge Bastos.

Companies interested in participating in the bidding process must submit proposals exclusively via Banco do Brasil’s Licitações-e platform, under the lowest-price criterion. The full tender and annexes are available on Infra S.A.’s website.

Northeast in focus

Due to its role in promoting some of Brazil’s most important connections, Fiol is considered essential to forming a logistics corridor that will facilitate the flow of agricultural production from Matopiba (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia) and strengthen the economy of the Northeast.

“This new construction front is a key stage in completing this railway, which will bring real transformation to the economy of Bahia and the entire country,” Bastos emphasized.

A borderless market

One of the features of the Fiol expansion project is its connection with the Midwest Integration Railway (Fico), in Mara Rosa, Goiás. The alignment integrates the bioceanic railway, linking the Atlantic to the Pacific — from the Port of Ilhéus to the Port of Chancay, Peru — creating a new trade axis with Asia. The project is included in the 2024–2027 Multi-Year Plan (PPA) and already has guaranteed federal funding.

The East-West rail corridor (Fico-Fiol) will have a total length of 1,708 kilometers, comprising 383 kilometers of Fico I (Água Boa/MT to Mara Rosa/GO), 840 kilometers of Fiol 3 (Mara Rosa/GO to Correntina/BA), and 485 kilometers of Fiol 2 (Barreiras to Caetité, Bahia).
