Brazil has just reached a historic milestone in fruit farming: the first shipment of Hass avocados, commonly known as avocados, has been officially exported to Chile. Carlini Avocados carried out the shipment, marking a new chapter for a sector that has grown rapidly in recent years.

As part of its strategic actions for international promotion, Abrafrutas, through the Frutas do Brasil project in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), held the Frutas do Brasil Festival – Chile on May 28 at the Ritz Hotel in Santiago. The event was attended by Chilean importers, local authorities, and representatives from companies and strategic institutions involved in strengthening Brazilian avocado exports.

The festival reinforced Abrafrutas’ commitment to expanding the presence of Brazilian fruit on the international market, promoting tropical fruits as products of excellence with recognized quality and high added value.

The opening of the Chilean market to Brazilian avocados was only made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the Brazilian Association of Fruit and Derivatives Producers and Exporters (Abrafrutas), the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), which worked intensively to meet Chile’s phytosanitary and regulatory requirements.

Chile is recognized as the world’s second-largest per capita consumer of avocados, second only to Mexico. According to data from Chile’s Avocado Committee, per capita consumption in 2024 reached 8.6 kg per person per year, up from 8.2 kg in 2023. This growth reflects strong domestic demand and Chileans’ preference for the fruit, solidifying the country’s position as one of the leading global avocado markets.

In 2024, Brazil exported over 24,000 tonnes of avocados. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, more than 6,000 tonnes of Brazilian produce were shipped abroad, indicating growing international interest in Brazilian products.

The state of São Paulo is the leading avocado producer in Brazil, accounting for nearly 45% of national production. According to the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA – Apta), the state produced 192,000 tonnes of fruit in 2023, representing an 8.54% increase over the previous year. This volume puts São Paulo ahead of other producing states, such as Minas Gerais and Paraná.

“The shipment of avocados to Chile is a milestone. It’s the result of a coordinated effort that proves Brazil’s ability to serve markets around the world,” said Eduardo Brandão, Executive Director of Abrafrutas.
