On an official mission to Southeast Asia, Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, met on Friday (24) with Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mohamad Sabu. The meeting resulted in the resumption of the Brazilian poultry trade with Malaysia and the opening of six new markets for Brazilian agricultural products.

The meeting is part of the mission led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is making official visits to Indonesia and Malaysia between October 23 and 28, focusing on strengthening strategic partnerships and expanding Brazil’s presence in the region.

Among the main topics discussed was the reopening of the Malaysian market for Brazilian chicken, which had been suspended due to sanitary measures related to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Minister Fávaro stressed the importance of shortening the current 12-month suspension period and implementing a regionalization system to allow for a faster resumption of exports of both poultry meat and genetic material.

“We arrived from Indonesia to Malaysia and went straight to the Malaysian Agriculture Ministry, where we held our first bilateral meeting with excellent news. The main one is the resumption of Brazilian chicken trade with Malaysia, a process that could have taken 12 months but was reduced to just three,” Fávaro said.

Below is a history of Brazilian poultry exports to Malaysia starting in January 2022. It is worth noting that there were no shipments in August 2025. The data is from DataLiner:

The meeting also expanded Malaysian market access for other Brazilian products. Malaysia authorized the import of both wild-caught and farmed fish, sesame seeds, melons, and apples, and also formalized the opening of the market for powdered eggs, while moving forward with the audit mission to evaluate 16 Brazilian pork plants.

“Poultry, pork, fruit, grains, sesame, eggs — Brazil is opening doors in Malaysia, creating opportunities for our producers and strengthening Brazilian agribusiness,” Fávaro said.

The meeting represents another step forward for Brazil’s Southeast Asia mission, reinforcing Brazil’s role as a strategic partner in global food security.

Brazil–Malaysia Trade

In 2024, bilateral trade between Brazil and Malaysia reached US$487.2 million, with US$346.4 million in Brazilian exports and US$140.9 million in imports. Malaysia ranks 23rd among the destinations for Brazilian exports.

In agriculture specifically, Brazil exported US$1.26 billion in 2024, with sugarcane, corn, and cotton among the top products.
