Brazil has reached a sanitary agreement with the Algerian government and is now authorized to export live sheep to the North African country.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Algeria, with 46 million inhabitants, is an increasingly important trade partner for Brazil. In 2021, Brazil exported around US$1.3 billion in agricultural products to Algeria. In 2024, these exports surpassed US$2.2 billion, with highlights including goods from the sugar-energy and soybean complexes, as well as cereals, flours, and preparations.
“This market opening represents a business opportunity, especially for exporters in northern and northeastern Brazil, where sheep farming holds economic and social importance, fostering job creation and regional development,” the ministry said in the statement.
With this announcement, Brazil’s agribusiness sector has achieved 401 market openings since the beginning of 2023 — 101 of them in 2025.
