The Port of Imbituba handled Brazil’s first export shipment of DDG (dried distillers grains) to China in February, marking a new milestone in bilateral agricultural trade.
The operation involved the loading of 62,500 metric tons of the corn-based byproduct and was carried out by Inpasa and Fertisanta. With the shipment, the southern Brazilian port expands its role as a logistics corridor for dry bulk cargo and strengthens its footprint in international trade.
DDG is a co-product of corn-based ethanol production. During processing, the grain’s starch is converted into ethanol, while nutrients such as protein, fiber and fat remain concentrated in the residual solids, which are widely used in animal feed.
Over the past three years, Fertisanta has moved roughly 800,000 tons of DDG through Imbituba. The opening of the Chinese market provides a new outlet for the product and reinforces the port’s strategic position in Brazil’s dry bulk export flows.
Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello said the state has been investing in port capacity expansion and logistics infrastructure improvements to support economic growth and attract new business opportunities.
State Ports, Airports and Railways Secretary Ivan Amaral and Port of Imbituba President Christiano Lopes said the shipment consolidates the terminal’s position as a strategic gateway linking Brazil to Asian markets.
