Meat prices soar in the U.S. and hit record highs amid tariffs on Brazilian exports
Beef prices in the U.S. reached historic highs in July, driven by a combination of reduced domestic supply and import tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration.

The impact is already being felt at barbecues and fast-food chains, which are facing higher costs for burgers and steaks.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average price of ground beef reached $6.34 per pound (about R$76 per kilo), while raw steaks hit $11.88 per pound (R$143/kg).

A year earlier, the prices were $5.62/lb (R$68/kg) and $10.86/lb (R$60/kg), respectively. Over 12 months, the beef and veal index rose by 11.3%.

Low stocks and heavy tariffs
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that the American cattle herd has declined to 94.2 million head, down from 94.4 million in 2020.

Production for 2026 is expected to be 31.1 billion pounds, the lowest volume since 2019.
