Brazil wheat sales remain sluggish in January, Cepea says

Wheat trading in Brazil is closing out the first month of 2026 at a slow pace, according to the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea). Farmers remain focused on harvesting the summer crop and planting second-crop fields, while buyers have been active mainly to partially replenish inventories. Even foreign trade has failed to gain momentum, with both imports and exports running below January 2025 levels.

Overall, Cepea researchers say sales have been limited to sporadic transactions, typically driven by producers’ need to raise cash or free up storage space. On the demand side, market participants report being adequately supplied, either through remaining stocks or volumes secured under contracts already in place for January and February, further curbing near-term activity in the spot market.

On Monday (Jan. 26), the Cepea/Esalq indicator in Paraná quoted bread-making or improver wheat at 1,174.88 reais per tonne, down 0.62% for the month to date. In Rio Grande do Sul, soft wheat was priced at 1,054.08 reais per tonne, up 0.77% since the start of January.
