Brazilian official calls for temporary suspension of dairy imports from Mercosur

Brazil should look into suspending, even if temporarily, dairy imports from Mercosur countries, said the Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock of Paraná state, Norberto Ortigara, during a conversation with journalists in Cascavel on 02/05.
According to him, the influx of milk into Brazil, especially from Argentina and Uruguay, has driven prices down to levels that local producers cannot compete with. As a result, farmers are leaving the industry every day.
“We have been working on this issue since mid-last year in Brasília. And I will say: if we don’t want to cry over spilled milk, we should shut down imports. At certain times, politics have to be tough,” he argued.
Ortigara claimed that the measures announced thus far by the National Supply Company (Conab), such as purchasing a portion of the production, are insufficient to address the issue.
