Brazilian tobacco exports performed strongly in the first four months of 2025, reaching the highest average price per kilogram in the past ten years. Between January and April, the average international market price for Brazilian tobacco was US$6.80/kg, a 12.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024 (US$6.06/kg) and a remarkable 124% jump from 2021 (US$3.03/kg). The price surge is closely tied to the rising U.S. dollar.

According to Comex Stat data, Brazil exported 133.48 thousand tonnes of tobacco between January and April 2025, generating US$907.6 million in revenue. China led the ranking of importing countries, purchasing 33.3 thousand tonnes for a total of US$324.2 million at an average price of US$9.72/kg—well above the overall average. Germany, despite importing only 2.35 thousand tonnes, paid the highest price per kilo among all countries: US$11.00/kg.

Over the past ten years, the average price per kilogram of Brazilian tobacco exports has fluctuated significantly. In 2015, the average was US$ 4.60/kg, gradually falling to a decade-low of US$ 3.03/kg in 2021. Since then, the sector has experienced a steady recovery and price appreciation. Growth accelerated particularly from 2022 onward, with prices rising to US$ 3.45/kg that year, followed by US$ 5.48/kg in 2023 and US$ 6.06/kg in 2024, culminating in the current US$ 6.80/kg.

This consistent rise reflects a renewed appreciation of the Brazilian commodity in the international market, driven by several factors. Chief among them is growing demand from Asian and Middle Eastern countries, which have expanded their share of purchases. The demand for higher-quality, value-added tobacco has also boosted average transaction values. Another key factor is strengthening the U.S. dollar against the Brazilian real, which has significantly increased export returns across all sectors of Brazil’s economy. In 2025, the average price per kilo in reais reached R$ 40.05, the highest of the decade.

Other noteworthy importers during the period included Vietnam and Colombia, who paid over US$ 8.00/kg.

Belgium and the United States remained among the top buyers in terms of volume, reinforcing the strategic importance of these markets for Brazilian tobacco.

The outlook for 2025 remains optimistic, with Brazil expected to maintain its global leadership in this agricultural segment. The SindiTabaco projection for the year anticipates US$ 3 billion in tobacco product exports.
