The Brazilian National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) approved on Monday, September 12, the privatization of the Santos Port Authority, the company that manages the Port of Santos. The project will now go to the Ministry of Infrastructure before being submitted to the Federal Audit Court (TCU).
According to Antaq, the concession contract’s term was set at 35 years, with the option of extending it for an additional five years in the event of an economic-financial imbalance.
According to the agency, the approved project calls for BRL 6.3 billion in new investments, with BRL 2.1 billion going toward port infrastructure and BRL 4.2 billion toward constructing the underwater tunnel between Santos and Guarujá.

The group that offers the largest bid, whose minimum amount was set at R$ 3.015 billion, shall leave the tender victorious.
The federal government has insisted on completing the privatization of the Santos port authority still in 2022, a scenario deemed unfeasible by the market and the Brazilian Development Bank, which highlights the importance of proceeding with the process with caution. Nevertheless, many players believe that getting TCU approval later this year would be a huge accomplishment.
