Santa Catarina is preparing to host its eighth port. Located in Itapoá, in the northern region of the state, the facility will be built by Coamo, Brazil’s largest cooperative, with operations expected to begin in 2030. The group will invest R$3 billion in a 43-hectare area capable of receiving three vessels simultaneously.

The announcement was made on Monday (25) in Florianópolis by the state government, together with company executives. The project is currently in the licensing stage, with construction scheduled to start in 2027.

The port is expected to handle 11 million tonnes of products per year. The facility will be able to operate LPG, bulk cargo, liquid fuels, and fertilizers. The Federation of Industries of Santa Catarina (Fiesc) is also monitoring the project.

According to the federation, Coamo already operates at the Port of Paranaguá (PR) but faces frequent congestion when shipping grains, such as soybeans, corn, and wheat.

Factors such as the deepening of the Babitonga Bay estuary near the state’s ports and the planned duplication of highways SC-416 and SC-417 influenced the decision to invest in Santa Catarina.

The state estimates that 2,000 workers will be hired during construction, and once operational, the new private port is expected to create around 1,000 jobs.

Santa Catarina currently has seven operational ports, five public and two private. In addition to the newly announced Itapoá port, construction of the Santa Catarina Grain Terminal (TGSC) in São Francisco do Sul is nearing completion.

Ports in Santa Catarina:

  • Port of Itajaí: Public, managed by the federal government
  • Port of Laguna: Public, managed by SCPar, focused on fishing
  • Port of São Francisco do Sul: Public, managed by SCPar (a state-owned mixed capital company), and currently the state’s busiest port by tonnage.
  • Port of Navegantes (Portonave): Private, forms the Santa Catarina Port Complex with Itajaí, the second-largest in Brazil
  • Port of Itapoá: Private, operating for 14 years, has already handled 10 million TEUs
  • Port of Imbituba: Public, managed by SCPar, one of the deepest natural-draft ports in southern Brazil, currently testing for 366-meter vessels
  • Santa Catarina Grain Terminal (TGSC): Private, located in São Francisco do Sul, currently in pre-testing phase
