According to the Brazilian Biscuit, Pasta and Industrialized Breads & Cakes Industry Association, Abimapi, wheat flour products industry recorded a 4.9% increase in revenue in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same period last year, reaching R$9.6 billion. According to the entity, pasta revenues increased 9.5% in the first four months of the year, to R$2.6 billion, while volume sales rose 3.9%, to 331,000 tonnes
Despite this, “For the future, the scenario will be a retraction, so it is important to dedicate yourself to reviewing goals, redesigning the year and reprioritizing projects,” said Abimapi in a note. The “biscuits” category, which accounts for most of the industry’s turnover, indicated a 0.6% increase in revenue in the first quarter and a 1.3% decrease in volume (R$4.7 billion and 363,000 tonnes respectively). The industrialized bread category registered an increase of 6.2% in sales and 7.1% in volume (R$1.8 billion and 143,000 tonnes).
The industrialized cakes category totaled an increase of 18.7% in revenue and 14.3% in volume (R$340 million and 12,200 tonnes), a result driven by the fact that hypermarkets and other food retail outlets remained open during the quarantine caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
