Brazil’s Port of Itaqui Unveils First National Decarbonization Plan at Intermodal Event

The Port of Itaqui, the largest public port in Brazil’s Northern Arc and the fourth largest in the country, officially launched its Decarbonization Plan on Wednesday (23) during Intermodal South America in São Paulo. This initiative is the first of its kind in the Brazilian port sector.
The plan was developed in partnership with Fundación Valenciaport, an international benchmark in innovation and sustainability. It stems from work started in 2022 with the creation of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory, which measured emissions across the entire Itaqui Port Complex.
The inventory revealed approximately 81,000 tons of carbon equivalent emitted in 2022, the plan’s base year. Based on this figure, Itaqui set progressive emission reduction targets through 2050.
The plan includes investments in green infrastructure, technology, digitalization, and discounted tariffs for less polluting operations. It also promotes the engagement of the entire logistics chain and the transition to a cleaner energy matrix in the port sector.
“The decarbonization plan is aligned with our strategic planning based on efficiency, sustainability, and innovation. It’s not an isolated initiative but part of an integrated vision for the future, built with responsibility and transparency,” said Bruno Mota, Planning Director at the Port of Itaqui.
In 2024, Itaqui has already handled over 34 million tons of cargo, demonstrating that growth can go hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility. The port is also recognized as the most advanced in digital transformation among Brazil’s public ports.
