Brazil’s Porto Central initiative to rescue local wildlife

Porto Central launched an initiative dubbed Terrestrial Wildlife Rescue Program, which composes part of an environmental package approved by the port company. This project aims to map and monitor the area where the port complex will be installed to redirect species that live there to a protected zone in the vicinity with the same ecological traits, keeping these animals safe from eventual impacts and nuisances during the port’s implementation.
Wildlife rescue operations are common in implementing projects such as Porto Central. This one, specifically speaking, complies with environmental standard 2.8 of IBAMA’s Installation License No. 1203/2018.
Concomitantly, Porto Central established a Provisional Fauna Support Center (CPAF), whose objective is to receive, care for and allocate animals that are found injured or demonstrating special needs by offering adequate veterinary care before reintroducing them to nature.
Another initiative pushed forward is creating an information and awareness campaign linked to the Porto Central Environmental Education Program, which is being fostered in meetings with local communities. In these informative sessions, residents are instructed on how to act if they see any lost or injured animal in the harbor area while calling Porto Central’s personnel to take the appropriate measures.
