Brazil’s sugar exports fall in July, but ethanol shipments jump 72%

Brazilian sugar exports declined in July 2025, according to data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) compiled by Itaú BBA. VHP sugar shipments totaled 3.13 million tonnes, a 5% decrease compared to July 2024, with an average price of US$403.9 per tonne—10% lower than the same month last year. Refined sugar exports also declined, with 449,000 tonnes exported (a 2% year-over-year decrease) and an average price of US$450.4/tonne, down 16%.

The positive highlight in the sugar-energy sector came from ethanol, which posted a 72% increase in export volume compared to the previous year, reaching 178 thousand m³. Despite the volume growth, the average price decreased 5% to US$ 543.80/m³.

From January to July, raw sugar exports totaled 14.28 million tonnes, down 19% from the same period in 2024, while refined sugar exports dropped 24% to 2.16 million tonnes. As for ethanol, accumulated exports reached 927,000 m³, a 20% decrease, although the average price rose 3% to US$560.9/m³.

Outside the sugar-energy sector, soybean exports remained strong, with 12.25 million tonnes shipped in July—a 9% increase compared to July 2024, although with prices 7% lower. Exports of fresh beef reached 277 thousand tonnes, a record in the historical series, with prices 26% higher. Corn exports decreased by 31% in monthly volume and are down 24% in the current marketing year, while green coffee exports declined 20% in July, despite a 58% increase in average price.
