The Container Terminal of Paranaguá (TCP) on January 13 opened a new warehouse, more than doubling its storage area following an investment of R$6.3 million, the terminal operator said.
The facility was expanded to 1,358.1 square meters from 633 square meters, a 114% increase in storage capacity. Of the total investment, R$5.6 million was allocated to civil works, while more than R$700,000 went to new pallet racking systems.
The warehouse serves the entire terminal but is primarily used by the maintenance team, which is responsible for ensuring the proper operation of critical equipment. The area stores items such as tires, steel and electrical cables, radiators, engines, IT components, personal protective equipment and cleaning materials. According to TCP supply chain manager Lígia Bahr, growth in operations, staff and logistical complexity made the modernization essential.
Beyond expanding usable space, the project incorporated new technologies, including push-back and cantilever storage systems, automated vertical lift doors and LED lighting, improving efficiency and organization. The push-back system, based on inclined rails with carts, allows for high-density storage, while cantilever structures facilitate the handling of long and heavy items. The vertically operated doors enhance operational safety. The upgrade also included improved ventilation in the administrative area, as well as renovated offices and break areas.
Over the past two years, TCP has completed a series of expansion projects and acquired new equipment. The number of terminal tractors rose to 69 from 52, while rubber-tyred gantry cranes increased to 40 from 29. The terminal also expanded its refrigerated container storage area by 45%, raising the number of reefer plugs to 5,268 from 3,624 and making TCP the port terminal with the largest reefer yard in South America.
