Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) has approved a concession project for the access channel to the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina in Paraná, with estimated investments of R$1 billion, the Ministry of Ports and Airports announced on Thursday.
In a statement, the ministry said it will publish the auction notice in the coming months, with the tender expected to take place in the second half of this year.
The concessionaire is expected to manage the asset for 25 years, with the possibility of extension for up to 70 years. Investments will focus on maintenance and expansion of activities, including deepening the draft from 13 meters to 15.5 meters.
According to the ministry’s statement, ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho stated that the ministry is working to apply the concession model approved for Paraná to other port complexes across the country.
The Port of Paranaguá, part of the Paraná port complex, is the second largest in Brazil in terms of size and total cargo volume, behind only the Port of Santos in São Paulo. According to the ministry, it is also the country’s largest handler of soy complex products (grains, meal, and oil) and is responsible for unloading 33% of the fertilizers imported by Brazil.
