Cargill, one of the world’s largest food and agribusiness companies, has completed a record-setting operation in northern Brazil. Using a convoy of 36 barges pushed by a high-capacity tugboat with 6,400 horsepower, the company transported 110,971 tonnes of corn in a single journey. The operation took place on July 5, along the Tapajós River between Miritituba and Santarém in the state of Pará.
The operation was a successful test as part of Cargill’s ongoing efforts to improve efficiency in the transportation of commodities such as corn and soybeans. The company views investment in logistics process improvement as both a commitment to its suppliers, customers, and business partners and a critical step in strengthening food security and maintaining the competitiveness of Brazilian agribusiness.
Cargill uses the river route in Pará to export grains produced in key regions of Brazil, including Mato Grosso, Goiás, and Mato Grosso do Sul. The process is completed at the Solid Bulk River Terminal in Santarém, which the company has operated since 2003. Following an expansion completed in 2018, the terminal’s annual shipping capacity was increased to 4.9 million tonnes.
