China doubles number of approved Brazilian sesame exporters

The number of Brazilian facilities authorized to export sesame to China has increased from 31 to 61, nearly doubling the total number of approved establishments, according to a new list released by China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC). The expansion strengthens Brazil’s position in the sesame export market and reinforces ties with the world’s largest consumer of the product.
The opening of the Chinese market to Brazilian sesame was announced in November 2024 during President Xi Jinping’s official visit to Brazil. At the time, the approval marked the 200th market opening under the current administration. It was the result of a coordinated negotiation effort between Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), the Agricultural Attaché in Beijing, the Brazilian Embassy in Beijing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), and the national private sector, which worked together to meet the requirements set by Chinese authorities.
Brazil is currently the world’s seventh-largest sesame exporter, accounting for 5.31% of global trade. The main producing states include Mato Grosso, Goiás, Pará, and Tocantins. Bahia, Minas Gerais, Maranhão, and Rondônia have also been gaining ground, with strong growth potential for the crop.
China, which accounts for 38.4% of global sesame consumption, is the world’s top importer of the seed. The significant expansion in approved facilities represents a concrete opportunity to strengthen Brazil’s presence in strategic markets and increase the potential for value-added production and regional development.
