China reduces swine targets for 2021 to 2025

China’s Ministry of Agriculture has reduced swine breeder herd targets for its five-year plan (2021-2025) to about 41 million heads, with the provisional plan indicating that these figures should not be less than 37 million heads. Previously, the goal was between 40 million and 43 million heads.
According to a ministry statement, “while the stock is maintained within a reasonable range, the production of piglets will be guaranteed and the supply of the pig market and pork prices will be maintained relatively stable.”
Pork prices in China plummeted in recent months, causing the country’s pig breeders to lose money amid excessive supply due to efforts to quickly rebuild their reproductive stock after an epidemic of African swine fever.
China, the world’s largest protein producer, had 45.6 million pigs at the end of June, about 2% more than at the end of 2017, a year before the beginning of African swine fever.
