China to impose provisional anti-dumping duties on EU pork imports

China announced on Friday, September 5, the imposition of provisional anti-dumping duties on imports of pork and pork byproducts from the European Union (EU), following a preliminary investigation.
According to a statement released by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the tariffs, ranging from 15.6% to 62.4%, will take effect on September 10 and will be collected as deposits by Customs.
The investigation was launched last June, shortly after Brussels announced plans to impose additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, amid escalating trade tensions between the EU and the Asian country.
“The body responsible for the investigation determined, on a preliminary basis, that imports of pork and pork byproducts from the EU are subject to dumping,” the ministry said.
Dumping is the practice of selling goods at prices below production cost.
The measures are, for now, provisional, as the investigation is expected to continue until December, when final conclusions will be announced.
Relations between China and the EU have deteriorated in recent years, particularly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Although presenting itself as a neutral party and potential mediator in the conflict, Beijing has never publicly condemned Moscow, and has been accused by several European capitals of helping Russia circumvent Western sanctions, notably through the supply of technological components used in the military industry.
