Chinese tariff on beef puts pressure on exporters and raises alarms in Brazilian agribusiness

The global beef trade begins the year under tension. As of January 1, China has already started applying a 55% tariff on imports that exceed previously established quotas. This decision directly affects the world’s leading exporters, including Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Australia, and the United States.
For Brazil, the impact is expected to be significant. The country has just become the world’s leading beef producer, overtaking the United States, and China is its largest external market. Brazilian exports for 2025 are estimated at 4.25 million tonnes, a volume that the new tariff policy could jeopardize.
Below is a historical overview of Brazilian beef exports to China starting in January 2022. The chart was prepared using DataLiner data:

The timing chosen by Beijing is not accidental. The decision was announced just days after sanctions were imposed on 20 U.S. defense companies in response to American arms sales to Taiwan. The message is clear: trade tariffs have become part of China’s geopolitical pressure toolkit.
In this context, Brazilian agribusiness finds itself at the center of a dispute that goes beyond trade. While former U.S. President Donald Trump maintains a confrontational stance toward Beijing and continues to support Taiwan, the Lula administration has adopted a policy of closer ties with China—a posture that, according to critics, exposes one of the most strategic sectors of the national economy.
Responsible for a decisive share of Brazil’s trade balance, agribusiness now faces a more uncertain environment. The combination of tariff restrictions and global political disputes could reshape export flows and put pressure on producers precisely at a time when Brazil is consolidating its prominent position in the international beef market.
