This week, the sailing ship MV Atlantic Orchard, chartered by Louis Dreyfus Company, docked at the company’s terminal in the Port of Santos to load juice. Its cargo and innovative technology stand out: it is the world’s first sail-powered juice transport vessel to operate with wind propulsion.
MV Atlantic Orchard: A Sustainable Sailing Vessel
Built in 2014 and registered under the Liberian flag, the MV Atlantic Orchard was retrofitted last year with four rigid sails, each 26 meters tall.
This technology harnesses wind as an auxiliary propulsion force, significantly reducing fossil fuel consumption.
According to Louis Dreyfus, the sails can cut CO₂ emissions and annual fuel consumption by up to 10%, depending on the route.
This represents a major step toward decarbonizing maritime transport, especially in the liquid cargo segment, such as fruit juice.
“Testing this technology aboard the MV Atlantic Orchard marks an important milestone in our decarbonization journey — both in juice operations and maritime freight — as we strive to contribute to a low-carbon economy and advance global energy transition goals,” the company stated on social media.
Port of Santos: A Leader in the Green Transition
The Santos Port Authority celebrated the vessel’s arrival as a milestone for logistics sustainability in Brazil, reaffirming the port’s commitment to the future of maritime transport.
“For the Port of Santos, the arrival of a ship with wind technology is a strategic advance in its path toward leadership in the sustainable logistics chain. The goal is to be at the forefront of decarbonized maritime transport, supporting global emission reduction initiatives and promoting a greener economy,” it stated in an official note.
In the coming days, the MV Atlantic Orchard will continue its voyage to the United States, carrying not only juice but also a powerful symbol of environmental innovation poised to transform the shipping industry.
With this initiative, the Port of Santos strengthens its role as a logistics hub, while the MV Atlantic Orchard ushers in a new era of modern sail-powered ships, proving that innovation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
