Corn Exports Drop 26% in January

According to the weekly analysis by the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea), Brazilian corn exports totaled 3.59 million tons in January 2025, a decrease of 15.73% compared to December 2024 and 26.29% compared to January of the previous year. The data was released by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex).
Mato Grosso, the country’s leading corn-exporting state, also recorded a sharp decline in shipments, with 1.53 million tons exported in the month. This volume represents 42.56% of the national total but marks a drop of 39.66% compared to December and 53.20% year-over-year.
Despite the decline, the reduction in exports was already expected due to the lower availability of corn in the first half of the year. Historically, shipped volumes decreased during this period as domestic stocks became more restricted.
Among the main destinations for Mato Grosso’s corn in January, Egypt was the largest buyer, purchasing 370,000 tons, followed by Iran (320,000 tons) and Vietnam (250,000 tons).
The trend for the coming months is an even further slowdown in corn exports, as Brazilian ports prioritize soybean shipments, which reach peak harvest and require greater logistical capacity.
