Cotton exports regain edge over domestic sales

After five consecutive months in which domestic cotton sales were more advantageous, exports of lint once again became more attractive in September, according to analysis by the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea). Data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) show that the average price received for exported lint so far this month is R$3.9410 per pound, 5.6% above the price recorded in the domestic market (R$3.7322 per pound, according to Cepea).

With exports now more attractive, Brazilian agents have prioritized shipments of lint. According to Cepea researchers, the nearing end of the harvest and the progress in ginning have helped accelerate exports. In September, 104,600 tonnes were shipped, 79.3% higher than the total in August (58,350 tonnes), although still 38.3% below the September 2024 volume (169,500 tonnes).

Domestic market prices continue to decline. On Tuesday (Sept 23), the Cepea/Esalq indicator for lint registered R$3.6578 per pound, a cumulative drop of 6.37% since the start of September.
