Domestic onion supply affects international purchases in Brazil
Apr, 25, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202320
In the city of Porto Xavier, in the southern border state of Rio Grande do Sul, the week of April 17th to 21st was marked by a drop in Argentine onion prices. According to sources at Hortifruti/Cepea, the imported goods face difficulties entering the Brazilian market due to the large volume of onions available in Brazil, including those produced in the Northeast region and those in stock in Santa Catarina.
The price of Argentine type 3 onions at the border was R$ 43.17 per 20kg bag, slightly below the prices in Santa Catarina. Still, with shipping costs factored in, the Argentine product has equal or higher prices than domestic onions. This helps control external purchases, preventing an accumulation of imported goods in Brazil. Nonetheless, sources reported that there is still demand for onions from our neighboring country, albeit at lower levels than in previous years.
