Environment Institute denies Timac having license for Sulfuric Acid Storage in Maceio

The Institute of the Environment (IMA) in Alagoas issued a statement on Monday, the 19th, clarifying that the environmental license granted by the agency for the Port of Maceió does not authorize new projects in the area. According to the IMA, any company interested in establishing itself in the area must obtain a specific license.
The IMA’s note vehemently denies the information that the agency granted an environmental license, during the COVID-19 pandemic, for the construction of a Sulfuric Acid Storage and Reception Unit (UREAS) by Timac Agro Indústria e Comércio de Fertilizantes LTDA in a designated area of the port.
The coming of Timac in Maceió has sparked extensive discussion and concern among environmentalists due to the perceived risks associated with a potential disaster.
IMA/AL clarified that the authorization is specifically related to the permission for land use and occupation issued by the Municipality of Maceió, and it should not be confused with the environmental license granted by the IMA.
In response, the company stated that the area where the sulfuric acid storage at the Port of Maceió could be located underwent a government bidding process that deemed the terminal suitable for handling the product. According to the company, the chosen location would allow for greater vertical integration of the fertilizer chain.
