EU and UK Reach Agreements to Renew Post-Brexit Relationship

The European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom agreed on Monday (19) to redefine relations between the two sides, signaling a post-Brexit rapprochement.
The agreement establishes partnerships in defense, trade, fisheries, and health. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the deal is expected to inject £9 billion into the UK economy.
Previously, the UK had proposed extending the EU’s access to British fishing zones for four to five years. The British government agreed to a long-term deal in exchange for facilitated access for UK food products to the European bloc.
A security and defense pact was also signed, including the UK’s participation in the EU’s joint procurement of defense equipment—a package totaling €150 billion.
The two sides also agreed to cut bureaucracy for UK agricultural exports.
According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the deal marks a “turning of the page” in EU–UK relations, which had been strained since the UK’s departure from the bloc.
Prime Minister Starmer echoed von der Leyen’s remarks, stating that the agreement aims to move past “old debates and political disputes.” The fisheries agreement sparked backlash among UK conservatives, who accused Starmer of “selling out” the sector to the EU.
Both parties were involved in intense overnight negotiations to finalize the details of the new relationship, including a potential youth mobility scheme. Under certain conditions, this scheme would allow the free movement of individuals aged 18 to 30 between the two territories.
Ambassadors from the EU’s 27 member states met on Monday morning to formally approve the package, while the leaders of EU institutions traveled to London to officially sign the agreement.
