The European Union has approved a pre-listing mechanism for Brazilian gelatin and collagen producers, simplifying the authorization process for exporting these products to the EU market.
The decision was reached during the Brazil–EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Mechanism meeting held in Brasília on March 4–5.
In practice, the pre-listing system streamlines the approval process for Brazilian establishments seeking to export gelatin and collagen to the European bloc. Widely used in sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, these products will now have a more direct pathway to access the EU market.
The approval also signals the European Union’s confidence in Brazil’s sanitary control systems for these products.
Representing the European side were officials from DG Santé and DG Trade, departments of the European Commission responsible for food safety and health, and trade policy, respectively.
On the Brazilian side, participants included representatives from the Secretariat of Trade and International Relations (SCRI) and the Secretariat of Agricultural Defense (SDA) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), as well as officials from Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
The meeting is part of an ongoing technical dialogue between Brazil and the European Union focused on sanitary and phytosanitary rules governing trade in agricultural products.
The progress comes amid closer relations between Mercosur and the European Union, following the signing of the long-awaited trade agreement after 26 years of negotiations.
